Delhi – Puri – Konark – Bhubaneswar – Kolkata – Delhi

Jagannath Temple60kms from the capital city of Bhubaneshwar, is the seaside retreat of Puri. The famous Jagannath Temple here makes the city one of the four “dhams” (holiest Hindu pilgrimage places in India).

The magnificent temple dedicated to Jagannath, an incarnation of lord Vishnu, attracts millions of devotees, especially during the Rath Festival. The city’s other great attraction is its long sandy beach.

The Rath Yatra

In June or July every year, Puri comes alive with thousands of devotees, who throng the city to witness one of India’s greatest annual events: The Rath Yatra (CAR FESTIVAL). Commemorating the journey of Lord Krishna from Gokula to Mathura, the festival of the ‘cars’ sets forth from the Jagannath Temple with the deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra taken in a procession to their summer temple for a week.

Konark Dance Festival

Every year in December, the open-air theatre near the Sun Temple witness the gathering of some of the most renowed dancers of India, who participate in the Konark Dance Festival. The specially illuminated stage, the backdrop of the celebrated Temple and the intricate rhythm of Indian Classical dances make this Festival an unforgettable event.

Konark Sun TempleKonark- A World Heritage Site

Sand Dunes, a deserted beach and the Sun Temple. Quite clean and unpolluted the Konark Beach is perfect place to relax and shop for some souvenirs at the colourful, bustling stalls that line the beach. Further down across the sand dunes is miles of deserted beach, fringed with casuarina and palm trees.

But the star attraction of Konark is undoubtedly the Sun Temple, built in the 13th century A.D. It is conceived as a Chariot carrying Surya, the Sun God, pulled by seven horses. The 24 intricately carved wheels that it stands on, symbolizes the division of time. Protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the sun temple is most impressive in the evenings, when it is illuminated between 6pm and 9pm.
